Nature and stability of 4-Methyl-2-Pentanone

- Apr 03, 2018-

1. It can be miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, benzene and animal and vegetable oils. It is an excellent solvent for nitrocellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, epoxy resins, natural and synthetic rubbers, DDT, 2,4-D, and many organics. Can be formulated as a low viscosity solution to prevent gelation.

2. Chemical properties: The carbonyl group and the adjacent hydrogen atom in the molecule are chemically reactive and chemically similar to butanone. For example, when oxidized with a strong oxidizing agent such as chromic acid, acetic acid, isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, carbon dioxide, and water are generated. Catalytic hydrogenation gives 4-methyl-2-pentanol. Addition product with sodium bisulfite. In the presence of a basic catalyst, a condensation reaction with other carbonyl compounds takes place. Condensation with hydrazine generates oximes and Claisen condensation with ethyl acetate.

3. Stability: Stable

4. Incompatible materials: Strong oxidants, strong reducing agents, strong bases

5. Polymerization hazard: Not aggregated
